I did a little fact-checking of my own into Rebel_Doc's "credentials" and claims that he did work for my friend Don Gilmore, author of "Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas Border", and this was Don's reply to me which he has given me permission to post here.  Mr. Gilmore asked only that I omit the person's name in my message.

Rebel Doc - I resent being called an "amateur" by you. I have a college background in American History with a BA degree from Tarleton State University. Please give the readers your credentials that make you an expert. Where did you get your degree and what is it in?
~Jay~

Resent it all you like. No one but a greenhorn would accept unsubstantiated fairy tales at face value while denying credible documentation in order to prop up a disproven claim.

For amusement I read -- on a near daily basis -- the wild stories and theories tossed about on one of your websites. With all due respect, Larry, Moe, Shemp and Curly would probably be more credible historians than you and your three most prolific posters.

As for my credentials -- My degree is in medicine. I have spent over 30 years studying the war on the Mo-Kan border, and am acquainted with many descendants of men who rode with Quantrill and Anderson. Results of my research has been included in books by Don Hale, Joanne Eakin, Ted Yeatman and Tom Goodrich. I have done fact checking for Don Gilmore and two history magazines. I routinely field questions on the guerrilla war from instructors at the war college at Ft. Leavenworth.

"Jay, there is every evidence that I do know this person. For one thing, I know no medical doctor who has any interest in history. No. 2, the only person I know of who has ever checked any facts for me is my good friend, a history Ph.d, but who has no interest in the Border War and wouldn't be interested, nor have time, to use the Civil War boards. So this fellow is clearly lying. He appears to be blending lies with a few partial truths. I'd guess that it was (name omitted), the fellow who says my book is "rubbish," if I were forced to guess. But this fellow is no one I know personally. That's clear, just a liar, and you can use everything but (name omitted)'s name if you like. He could be anyone of those lying reprobates on the Civil War board. NO! don't know this fellow at all. He is not a medical doctor, and just blew his lying cover.

Don G."

Because his lack of credibility has been exposed, I will no longer reply to any messages by Rebel_Doc on this or other message boards.

At Centralia last August, Gilmore requested I check a few items he was including in his novel about Jesse James.  He does not know me as Rebel Doc, nor by any profession other than as a historian.  He and I have talked in person, and exchanged a number of e-mails.

Jay Longley,

I would like to say here from a bad personal experience that checking into a person's life other than what he offers on this forum can lead to uncovering Scorpions.

I take it Mr. Longley was not at Centralia last August with you and Gilmore to even know you know Gilmore as well or what you even discussed?

Admin: Play nice please.  You are posting this for anyone anywhere to read, act professional.  If we are to debate and disagree on history then let us do so like the scholars and students that we are, please.

No dog in this fight, gents. But it would be nice for the rest of us if it were dialed down a touch.

I received the following from Mr. Gilmore this evening:

Quote
Chuck,
Sorry for the snide remarks as passed on by Jay Longley. I had no idea who was at the other end...
I'm caught between people I know and don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. You can tell him that I mistook you for a CSI historian, which I did, and that you were telling the truth about my asking your advice on a Jesse James fact that is disputable in most histories.
I thought the reference was to my Border War book, and you were referring to the James book.

Don
