I would have to say that my favorite book would be The Struggle for the Life of the Republic by Charles Dana Miller a soldier in the 76th OVI from my hometown, Newark OH.

He starts out being elected to sergant after helping with the recruitment process. He is then promoted to 1st sgt, then to sgt maj, then to adjutant, and finaly captain of his old company. He was sent home in '64 with a bad case of malaria, where he stayed never returning to the front. He was later given a brevet rank of Major for valor previously shown in combat.

thanks,
Jurg
