America's Trans Continental Railroad was expected to follow a southern route and had even been surveyed to study the engineering requirements that would connect the south to the west and bring economic development, industrial diversification, trade, and political power to the south. Northern interests won out and denied the south this chance of the century to compete with the north in industry and banking and trade. Southerners looked on this as just another example of anti southern discrimination.
