Hello friends I have recive this mail from John McDonald, i wonder if anyone can help this John McDonald.

Recently I acquired a CW kepi. It came from the estate of a grandson of a
CW soldier. The soldier was Jas.W.Hildebran, 139th Regiment, 2nd Brigade,
2nd Div.,6th army Corp. Pa. He lived in Greenville Pa.
Assuming it was the cap he wore in the war, I thought it was Union, but I
couldn't find anything to tell me about it. By luck, I found it on a
reenactment site. I was shocked and surprised, it was a Confederate
officers kepi, and more surprised it was a generals.
I crossed the sites where the 139th served with the names of Generals
killed at those sites. I narrowed it down to about 30 generals (if the
owner of the kepi was killed) who were at the same site.
Now I am trying to determine how many of those generals were in the
infantry, since the kepi has English I's on the 2 brass buttons.
I am looking for any help I can find to help me try and determine who this
kepi might have belonged to. I am attaching pics to show you what I believe
is a rare item. The last 2 pics might help you to show who manufactured the
kepi. Thanks, John McDonald

There seems to be a bit of info on Private James William Hildebrand.  Congratulations.  I would assume the cap is a memento, but not necessarily from a dead general (easy enough to lose a hat in action).  It could even be from Gettysburg.  It would be quite a stroke of luck to find more letters that might shed a clue.  Good luck!

Hello Timotheus
Thanks for the information you sent.
I have contacted John McDonald on your response to his question.
I hope it helps him.
I asked him to come back to us if he has more questions.

Post the pictures or a link to the Company of Military Historians site.  I'm a member of The Company, but I'm not a uniform expert like many of our members are.
