I enjoyed privious postings regarding Confederate POW camps, and being new here - I thought I would share this bit of information with everyone.

Did you know that New York State had a total of 15 Confederate Prisoner of War camps?

One of the most famous, which most of us are aware of was Elmira, another was outside of Albany, NY - better known as the NY State Penn (which still exist today). They held mostly political prisoners.

Believe it or not -13 prisons alone where in and around the NY City area, such as Ft Lafayette, Fort Columbus, Fort Wood (be the way still exist today - you wouldnt know it, but it was last used for military used as a POW camp, and now is the very base of the Statue of Liberty).

If anyone is interested in more info - feel free to contact me
Regards

This later quote doesn't seem to quite match this earlier one:

Would appreciate it.

Hello Ole

At Elmira, 3000 Confederate soldiers died while prisoners in a 13 month period, as I mentioned in my 1st posting

in the same paragraph I mentioned there were 15 POW camps in NY State, on of which was the Albany State Penn, which mostly held political prisoners

I hope that cleared up any confusion

Regards,
Steve
