    Nelson enlisted in a NY inf reg't participating in engagements from Bull Run to Burnside's Mud March. Mustered out and six months later, enlisted in a NY cav reg't. Wounded during the Wilson-Kautz Raid, Nelson later served in Custer's 3rd Div.
