This regiment was principally recruited in the eastern section of Pennsyll vania, and was organized at Camp William Penn, on the 17th of February, 1865, with the following field officers:
- Orlando Brown, Colonel
- James M. Trippe, Lieutenant Colonel
- Robert E. Stewart, Major
A large proportion of the commissioned officers had previously been in the service.
Early in May, the regiment proceeded to Washington, and was placed in Camp Casey, on the Virginia side of the Potomac, opposite the city. On the 1st of June, it was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, where it was employed in guarding rebel prisoners.
About the middle of July, it was ordered to Richmond, Virginia, and after a delay of two weeks, was assigned to duty in the sub-district of the Roanoke, comprising six counties, with headquarters at Burkesville. Posts were established at each county-seat, where government supplies were distributed to the needy inhabitants, and the troops,were employed in preserving order. The regiment continued in this duty until near the close of September, when it was ordered to Richmond, and on the 1st of October, was mustered out of service.
