He wrote that one day everyone was in agreement that sufficient numbers of men were volunteering so that no draft would be needed. But then a rumor would circulate indicating the numbers were deficient and that a draft would be inevitable. This confusion reigned supreme during the month of August 1862, but ultimately, no draft was necessary. Lt. Fish and his father Nathan, in partnership with William Maxson, were engaged in ship building for Maxson, Fish & Co. The enterprise built and launched 14 vessels during the civil war but a depression in the shipping business after the war eventually forced the business to close. Reply |
