Lt. Edward Manning

Lt. Edward Manning Edward Manning first served as commissary sergeant for the regiment and was promoted to second lieutenant after Lt. Hervey Jacobs fell during the assault on Port Hudson of June 14th.

Manning was known to hold daily prayer meetings in his tent and acted as chaplain for the regiment at times. One of his comrades-in-arms said of him,

"He carried his religion with him into the army, and was ready to fight under the banner of the cross, as under the flag of his country.

" He died at his home in Norwich on the day the regiment was mustered out of service, and just three days after receiving his commission as a lieutenant.
