John H. (Henry) LEWIS, was one of my GGGrand father's and a VA Confederate. He was a 2nd Lt., when he lead and was captured at Gettysburg, PA. He was born in 1835 in Portsmouth, Virginia, he married an EMMERSON of Portsmouth, Vriginia. He enlisted in Virginia and wrote a GREAT and very informational book about his experiences during the civil war called "Recollection from 1860 to 1865". He died in Washington DC, 1917. http://www.dc-confederate-1900s.info
You can usually buy his book at www.amazon.com
go to www.footnote.com
and there I have a few pages, census' on him. After returning home from the last of the POW camps, he was in, they would not allow CONFEDERATES, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to work, who had served, that is why he moved to Washington DC, where he became a builder. He also, has another living GGGranddaughter, which I know of at this time, name Karen STOKES, her married name I did not wish to put here at this time. She helped me find a lot of LEWIS, civil war info.
