George H. Pfau served throughout much of the war in Company E of the Fourth New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He must have treasured his service, for he tried to attend the 25th Gettysburg Reunion in 1888. I have a photocopy of a letter from him to a General W. S. Stryker, commander of the Pensylvania branch of the Grand Army of the Republic. In the letter, Private Pfau asked to join the PA delegation to the Gettysburg reunion since the NJ delegation was already filled. The letterhead shoes that he co-owned a shoe store in Philadelphia with a fellow named Southwick. Reply |
