(The following information was sent by Thomas Hosler's Great Grand son Ray Hosler : Thomas Hosler son of Isaac and Sarah Ebert Hosler. Born April 12, 1839 in Fairfield County, Ohio, near Columbus. Married twice. First wife Martha Midlaus in 1861 and had two children. Second wife Charlotte Talmadge Purdy. With his second wife he had five children, my grandfather being the fifth.

He joined the 55th on Nov. 12, 1861. Captured at Chancellorsville on May 2. Held in Libby Prison for 30 days when exchanged for Confederate prisoners. Promoted from Corporal to Sergeant on Jan. 10, 1863. 1st Sergeant on Sept. 1, 1864; promoted to Sergeant Major on May 20, 1865.

After the war he was in business in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, later in the building and contracting business (my grandfather was a carpenter) in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Moved to Villa Ridge, Ill. and was known there as a horticulturist. Died April 17, 1909.

As you probably already know, many of the Ohio units were German descendents. That's one reason why they were ignored by the 11th Corps commander when they alerted command to the Rebel units massing on their flank, but were ignored.

My ancestry traces back to Sebastian Hassler (changed to Hosler when the family moved to Ohio). He was born in Basel, Switzerland, and sailed to America, arriving Aug. 30, 1749. Four of his five sons served in the American Revolution. The early Hosler, like many Germans, settled in Berks County, Pa.

Best regards,
Ray Hosler)
