North Carolinian Catherine Edmondston wrote on 11th February 1862: "The Misses Smith, Sue & Kate, dined with us. We thought of little else save Roanoke Island & tho' I made an effort to throw off the gloom & talk of other things yet it all seemed hollow & artificialĀ & I could not enter into the merriment of Kate & Sue as I wished. At night came the news of the Bombardment and burning of Elizabeth City. The whole of our vessels with the exception of two only has fallen into their hands or been burned by us to prevent it. The Yankees landed and put out the fire in Elizabeth, but the inhabitants fled in great confusion. We have no particulars." Reply |
