I recently found a letter signed by my Great Great Grandfather detailing his service on the Peninsula as a physician.
Once he and 4 other doctors arrived to tend to the wounded confederates left behind after Yorktown, he sailed to Fortress Monroe with 500 convalesced ANV soldiers for their detention. This letter was dated July 15, 1862.(NYTIMES.COM)
