Captain Jedediah Randall

Captain Jedediah Randall

Captain Jedediah Randall Jedediah Randall was Captain of Company K, the "Groton Company," so named because all it's members, save one, were from Groton, Connecticut.

During the assault of May 27th, he was shot through both legs. After he fell he was approached by Lt. Col. Selden who offered to help him but Randall refused aid saying, " Never mind me Colonel. I'm all right. Go and take care of the boys.

" Captain Randall was eventually carried from "Slaughter's Field" and taken to Baton Rouge with the badly wounded. A fever set in and he died soon thereafter.

He was eulogized by the chaplin of the 26th regiment: "He was beloved by his men, and the regiment, both officers and privates. * * * It was pure patriotism that led him to leave a lucrative business, and one of the best homes that a young man could have, and volunteer for his country's defense.

When the time of action came he led his men valiantly to battle, and fell mortally wounded; thus sealing his love of country with his blood."
