Scandinavian Soldiers that served in different state

Scandinavian Soldiers that served in different state

Pages for Scandinavians who fought for the Confederate States during the War Between the States. The subject has been a forgotten part of the history of the War.Little have been known about many of the units they fought and who they were. These pages will try to enlighten some of the Scandinavians "in rebel ranks" that did fight for their new homeland. Since the war ended, almost everything related in the Scandinavian community has envolved around their participation on the Union side, and that`s natural, since 97% of the soldiers did fight on this side of the conflict.

Co A

Private Gabriel OLSEN

B: ca. 1832 in Kristiansand, Norway. Enlisted at Mobile, Ala., in Co. C, 3rd Alabama Volunteer Militia on 4 Mar 62. Discharged on 25 Mar 62 as unfit for duty. Again enrolled at Mobile 16 Aug 62 in Co. A, 24th Alabama Infantry. Formally enlisted at Bardstown, Ky., 1 Oct 62 for the war. Straggled on the retreat from Kentucky 9 Oct 62 and was captured by the Federals. Forwarded to Gallatin, Tenn., from Camp Dick Robinson, Ky., 25 Oct 62. Apparently exchanged shortly after 18 Nov 62. Absent sick in General Hospital, Mobile, Ala., Dec 62 through Feb 63. Discharged for disability 27 Feb 63 (Surgeon's Certificate). The regimental officers apparently believed that he had deserted and caused him to be dropped from the rolls of the 24th Alabama by General Orders no. 13 (dated Tullahoma, Tenn., 28 Jan 63), although medical records clearly show that he was at this time in hospital in Mobile. Left Mobile for New Orleans in early March 64. Took the oath of allegiance to the United States at New Orleans on 16 Mar 64 under the name of Gabriel Alston. Claimed exemption from the Federal draft 28 Apr 65 by reason of having deserted from the 24th Alabama on 4 March 64, obviously a false claim, as he received a discharge from the C.S. army on 27 Feb 63. Description: 5' 7" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, by occupation a shoemaker.

Captain Charles M OHLSON (Acting Commissary and Subsistence Officer)

Appointed from Co E 13 Aug 62 at Clinton, Tenn. Relieved from duty by Special Order no 83/ 3 (dated 20 May 63), Headquarters, Department No. 2 and Western Department. Present and accounted for through Jun 63. Next appears on a list of Confederate POWs confined and released at Kemper Barracks, Cincinnatti, Ohio, dated 6 Oct 63. Remarks: "Turned over to Capt. [C. R.] West, 20th Kentucky". D: ?

Here is the history about his capture, taken from the book "THE CAMP, THE BIVOUAC AND THE BATTLE FIELD"
by W.L. GAMMAGE , BRIGADE SURGEON OF MC'NAIR'S BRIGADE (written and published in 1864)

" I have already alluded to the capture of some of our medical officers of the brigade on the evening of Friday the 18th of September 1863. It happened in this wise: Dr. DeBerry, surgeon of the 2d Arkansas regiment; Dr. Orme, surgeon of the 25th Arkansas regiment; Dr. Hatcher, surgeon of the 39th North Carolina regiment; Drs. Mitchell, and Jones, assistant surgeons of the 4th Arkansas and 31st Arkansas regiment and 4th battalion Arkansas Infantry, with Capt. Charles M. Ohlson, happening to remain behind to procure rations, attempted to join their commands, when they were halted by a picket and required to tell who they were, which having done, they were ordered to dismount and advance, one at a time. They, supposing the challenge to be a Confederate vidette, complied, one going forward at a time. Dr. DeBerry, being the hindmost one of the group, halted, and having a suspicion that there was something wrong, turned his horse and galloped furiously back down the road. The others were no sooner within the picket lines than they were robbed of their horses and hurried back to Chattanooga under guard, where they were kept as prisoners until the fight was over and all of our wounded shipped off to the various hospitals in the interior. The medical officers were then exchanged and sent through the lines to join the command. Captain Ohlson was retained as a prisoner of war, and the boys who shared his captivity for a short time report that the last time they saw him, he was keeping step between two lusty musketeers and cursing the Dd wagabones-. "
